Craig Hignett takes the applause after his match winning half century

We’re delighted to confirm that The Roy Simpson MBE Foundation Cricket Match will return this summer when a host of well-known names will take to the pitch at Peterlee.

Last year’s event proved a huge success with a number of footballers connected to Hartlepool United, Middlesbrough and Spennymoor Town tried their hands at cricket.

Team Captains, Micky Barron and Graeme Lee have already confirmed their return for this year’s match, which will take place at Peterlee Cricket Club at 2pm on Sunday 28th June.

Now they are busy assembling their star-studded squads to do battle at the crease, gain the bragging rights and bid to lift The Roy Simpson MBE Trophy.

Last year, Boro legend Craig Hignett stole the show with an unbeaten 50 to steer Barron’s Blasters to victory – so Spike’s Sloggers will be keen for revenge this time around.

“Last year was only planned as a one-off event but everyone had so much fun, that we had to do it again,” said Foundation Chair, Mark Simpson.

“The players put on a competitive and hugely entertaining match and the people who came along to support it all really enjoyed themselves too.

“We are crossing our fingers that the sun shines on us this year and we can attract an even bigger crowd to come along and see the lads swap football for cricket.

“We’ve got some big names lined up again to play so it’s going to be another cracking afternoon on which we can hopefully raise a lot of money for a good cause.”

Entry to the match will once again be just £3 for adults and completely free for Under-16s, though any donations to the Foundation on the day are very welcome. Payment can be made by cash or card on the gate upon entry.
