Ian Clark smashed an unbeaten 50 to lead Spike’s Sloggers to victory over Barron’s Blasters in the second annual Roy Simpson MBE Trophy match on Saturday.

The event held at Peterlee Cricket Club saw former footballers from Middlesbrough and Hartlepool United swap sports for an afternoon of fun in the name of charity.

Former Pools midfielder Clark was the pick of the performers with his classy half century guiding Spike’s Sloggers through to setting a target of 125 from their 20 overs.

Barron’s Blasters made a spirited response with former Pools engine room partners Mark Tinkler and Antony Sweeney building an impressive partnership early in the innings.

However, despite some heavy hitting from ex Poolies Brad Walker and Nicky Deverdics at the death, the Blasters fell just short in reply and gave up the trophy they won in last year’s inaugural encounter.

The presentation to winning captain Graeme Lee was made by Roy’s wife, Cynthia, while Foundation Trustee Peter Nicholson handed over the Man of the Match trophy to Clark.

“It was another memorable afternoon for the Foundation,” said Chair of Trustees, Mark Simpson.

“To see so many former players come together to help us raise money for such a good cause was humbling and the good weather brought a good turnout from supporters too.

“We’ve raised over £500 for the charity during the course of the afternoon so I just want to thank everyone who played and supported the event, as well as Peterlee Cricket Club and all those behind the scenes who helped make it such a success.”
